The Power of Intentional Travel: Rest, Renewal, and Bold New Beginnings

July is a quiet month. My kids are at camp, most of my clients are off on summer adventures, and even my group texts have gone silent. So, on a bit of a lark, I decided to exhibit at the Body Mind Spirit Expo here in Austin… and it’s been a surprisingly rich experience.

I was surrounded by booths offering crystal healing, sound baths, bracelets for balancing negative ions, and psychic readings. My favorite moment? A woman asked if I was an astral cartographer, which, apparently, is someone who helps you find the best place on Earth for your energy to thrive. She told me her parents had been advised to move to Colorado, and they ended up enjoying 23 prosperous years there. Not bad advice, actually.

In the midst of all the sage bundles and soul readings, I found myself talking about something a bit new: how travel — when it’s planned with intention — can truly transform. It can be a healing balm, a mirror, or a doorway to something entirely new.

✨ More Than Just a Vacation

Most of the time, travel is about fun. It’s a break from the everyday, a chance to explore, try new foods, or learn something interesting. But sometimes, especially in seasons of transition, travel can become something more.

It can be a pause that invites reflection. A reset that heals. A spark that reignites what matters most. And I’ve learned that the most transformational trips tend to fall into one of three categories:

🌿 Rest & Renewal

When you’re tired, burned out, or stretched thin… what you need most is space to breathe.

This kind of trip isn’t about sightseeing or ticking boxes — it’s about slowing down, reconnecting with your body, and letting your nervous system settle. It could look like:

  • A wellness retreat at Miraval or Canyon Ranch (see my Canyon Ranch blog)

  • A peaceful week at Rancho La Puerta, nestled in Baja’s healing landscape

  • A quiet, cozy lodge in Iceland or a lakeside escape in Northern Michigan

These are the journeys where you sleep deeply, take long walks without checking your phone, and come home feeling more grounded than when you left.

💞 Reconnection

Sometimes, what we need most is meaningful time with the people we love.

Travel gives us that, when it’s thoughtfully planned. It pulls us out of our routines and into moments that matter. Lately, I’ve been designing a lot of reconnection trips, like:

  • Friend birthday celebrations at  all-inclusives where everything is taken care of

  • Family reunions in Colorado, filled with hikes, games, and shared dinners

  • A mother-daughter trip to Paris, where croissants and cobblestone streets created lasting memories

  • A father-son trip to see the Northern Lights — something awe-inspiring they’ll always remember

Whether the group is two people or twenty, the goal is the same: put the phones down, share an experience, and reconnect with each other.

🔥 Bold New Beginnings

When you’re standing at a crossroads, travel can give you the clarity and courage to step forward.

These are the journeys that feel a little bigger. Maybe it’s a solo trip after a career change, or a rite of passage after sending your last child off to college. Maybe it’s an experience that stretches you… physically, emotionally, perhaps even spiritually.

Some examples for this kind of travel:

  • Trekking in Patagonia or biking through the Alps with Backroads

  • A solo journey to Japan built around reflection, hot springs, and letting go

  • A safari in Africa, where the vastness of the landscape and proximity to wildlife can shift something deep inside

These trips often leave you feeling more fully you. And they’re some of my favorite itineraries to build.

🌎 What Makes Travel Transformational?

It’s not just the destination… it’s the intention. But certain elements show up again and again in the most meaningful journeys:

  • Nature: Wide open landscapes, fresh air, and stillness give us perspective.

  • Culture: Immersing yourself in another way of life can shift your mindset in profound ways.

  • Intentionality: When you know what you need, the trip becomes more than just an itinerary, it becomes a mirror and a catalyst.

✨ What Do You Need Right Now?

Take a moment to ask yourself:
Do I need rest? Reconnection? Or a bold new beginning?

There’s no wrong answer. Your answer can shape the right kind of trip for you. And when you build a journey around what you actually need, that’s when travel becomes transformational.
