Two Paths to Wellness: My Canyon Ranch Experience

In February 2025, Bjorn and I traveled to Canyon Ranch in Tucson with two other couples for a wellness getaway that was as social and fun as it was restorative. It reminded me how truly flexible Canyon Ranch has become — a place where you can create the wellness experience that fits your needs, whether you’re seeking camaraderie and casual connection or a deeply intentional reset.

What Is Canyon Ranch?

Canyon Ranch is one of the original pioneers in wellness travel. Its Tucson location, nestled in the Sonoran Desert, is known for blending fitness, spa, nutrition, and medical expertise with natural beauty and restorative surroundings. Over the years, the resort has evolved — and I was pleasantly surprised by just how modern and flexible the experience feels today.

Yes, there’s still daily yoga, hikes through stunning desert terrain, and a wide variety of mind-body classes. But now there’s also good coffee, a lively happy hour in the afternoon (yes, with cocktails!), and the kind of ease that makes wellness feel truly accessible.

A Wellness Getaway That Can Be as Social — or Solo — as You Like

Our group went with the mindset of having fun, and that’s exactly what we did. We laughed a lot, tried a few new fitness classes, ordered multiple dishes at meals (because why not?), and didn’t feel a trace of guilt about how we spent our time. There are over 35+ fitness and wellness classes offered daily — from strength training and cardio dance to meditation and intention-setting — but you’re free to do as much or as little as you like.

Bjorn, who isn’t one for group classes, went on long solo hikes and found quiet spots to read. I popped into a few group classes, had a massage, and fully leaned into the luxurious spa robes lifestyle. No one’s tracking what you eat or how many classes you take. You’re in charge — and that freedom is part of what makes the experience so restorative.

A More Intentional, Programmatic Path

While we chose the relaxed, social route, Canyon Ranch also offers a much more structured option. If you’re going through a life transition — such as processing grief, facing burnout, or striving for major health or lifestyle changes — you can work with their team to build a customized program. These include curated meals, targeted fitness and therapy sessions, medical consultations, and mind-body classes. You can also join one of their themed retreats, which are offered throughout the year and bring together small groups around shared goals.

What’s Included — and Group Savings

Canyon Ranch is an investment in yourself, and it’s not inexpensive. That said, the rates are comprehensive: they include accommodations, three nutritious (and delicious) meals a day, snacks, full access to daily classes and lectures, and a set amount of daily service credit you can use for massages, facials, acupuncture, or personal consultations.

Bonus tip: If you come with 8 or more people (not rooms — just people), it qualifies as a group, and I can help secure lower rates and added perks.

The Bottom Line

Whether you want to reset with friends, recharge solo, or dig deep into personal growth, Canyon Ranch offers a flexible path to wellness. I came away feeling lighter, clearer, and grateful — not just for the time away, but for the permission to do it my way.
