I Did a Cancun All-Inclusive Pre-Trip Trip, So You Don’t Have To

Let me just say this upfront: I love a good all-inclusive resort. If I could, I’d Cancun my way through life once a year – minimum. It’s sunshine, margaritas, guac on demand, and zero pressure to make any real decisions. Heaven.

So when it came time to plan my 40th birthday trip, I knew it had to be in Cancun. But here’s the thing – when you invite friends and family and tell them, “Trust me, this is the best one,” you better be REAL sure it is.

Which is why I did what any slightly travel-obsessed, detail-oriented, type-A vacation planner would do: I went on a reconnaissance mission. A full-blown Cancun resort-testing adventure.

The Crew: Me, My Best Friend, and My Mom (a.k.a. the Ultimate Focus Group)

To make sure I wasn’t just picking a resort based on gorgeous beach photos and dreamy swim-out suites, I brought along my best friend (resident vibe-checker) and my mom (who does not sugarcoat bad food). Between us, we covered all the bases – party potential, food quality, pool scene, spa vibes, and “Would Nana enjoy this?” energy.

We stayed at four different resorts in four days – a full day and night at each. Yes, we checked in, unpacked, tested the beds, the room service, the nightlife, and the beach chairs like we were judges on a five-star reality show.

By the end, we were slightly sunburned, highly opinionated, and full of knowledge (and tacos).

Our Method: Thorough. Extra. Mildly Unhinged.

Here’s how we “tested” each resort:

Food & Drink (Our Most Important Category)

  • Multiple dinners each night – 5 pm first restaurant dinner, 8 pm second dinner at a different restaurant (Research!)
  • Every cocktail menu conquered – pool drinks, club drinks, questionable shots included
  • Breakfast quality checks – because if the coffee’s bad, we’re out

Facilities & Vibes

  • Every pool lounged in like we were born to relax poolside
  • Every beach walked and sat on – even the rocky disappointments
  • At least one activity per resort – aqua aerobics with margaritas, anyone?
  • Nightlife assessment – DJ quality, lighting, and overall danceability

The Details That Matter

  • Room service timing and quality – with one particularly delicious order arriving in just 12 minutes!
  • Bed comfort testing since quality sleep is non-negotiable
  • Kids club reconnaissance because almost half my birthday trip crew brought their little tornados

The Results: So Much Vacation Intel

I now know which resorts have:

  • Beachfront pizza ovens (and yes, I cried a little when I found it)
  • Dolphin experiences available on-site (Hyatt Ziva, I see you)
  • Rooms so nice you’ll be tempted to cancel your excursions
  • Beautiful, white-sand beaches (and which ones… don’t)
  • Kid’s Clubs that actually entertain your kids – not just stick them in a room with crayons
  • Teens-only zones that don’t feel like punishment
  • Nightlife for grownups that doesn’t feel like Spring Break 2002

Basically, I’ve earned my honorary degree in Cancun All-Inclusive Studies. And I’m here to help.

And the Winner Is…

Secrets Riviera Cancun (aka the one I chose for my 40th birthday bash!)

Out of all the resorts we visited, Secrets Riviera Cancun was the clear winner for what we wanted: Adults-only, amazing food, relaxing atmosphere, and just the right touch of fun.

It’s attached to Breathless Riviera Cancun, which means if you stay on the Secrets side (the fancier, quieter side), you get access to both resorts. Breathless guests don’t get access to Secrets, which helps keep the Secrets side more calm and upscale.

Why I Picked It:

  • Less crowded thanks to its higher price point – more peaceful, more loungers, and zero towel-chair wars
  • Poolside drink service in the mornings (yes, they bring cocktails to your lounger at 10 a.m., bless them) and throughout the day
  • No extra charge for cabanas – and since we wake up early, we always snagged a great spot
  • Amazing food – with 8 à la carte restaurants, so you’re never stuck eating at a buffet (unless you want to)
  • Gluten-free pizza from the beachside pizza oven (cue happy tears)
  • Impressive dining variety – the French, Italian, and Japanese restaurants each delivered exceptional experiences with distinct culinary approaches and authentic flavors
  • 24-hour coffee and pastry shop (non-negotiable for me – everyone runs on good coffee and snacks)
  • Friendly, kind, incredible staff – I wrote glowing reviews for several because they truly made our trip special
  • Beautiful, clean resort with thoughtful touches everywhere

The beach isn’t the most stunning in Cancun, but honestly? It was perfectly fine. We walked it every day, dipped our toes in, and spent most of our time by the pool, eating pizza and pretending we were influencers.

Tell Me Your Travel Style

Are you the “never leave the pool” type, the “adventure every day” family, or the “just bring me drinks and silence” vacationer? I’d love to hear about your vacation priorities and help you find the perfect resort match. Want the best room service? Most gorgeous pool? A kids club that buys you five hours of blissful peace? Reach out to me – let’s find your perfect match.

I did the hard work so you can show up in flip-flops, confidently order the perfect drink, and bask in your excellent decisions. After four resorts and way too many “research” margaritas, I know exactly which frozen passionfruit mezcal margarita will change your life.

And stay tuned for the full resort breakdowns. Your future vacation self will thank you. In the coming posts, I’ll break down the best resorts for:

  • Adults-only luxury with amazing food and cocktails
  • Kid-friendly fun that still feels like a vacation for you
  • Best beaches (because not all sand is created equal)
  • Nightlife without the frat party vibe
  • Pure relaxation without mind-numbing boredom
