Rhine river cruises are not all the same, even when they visit many of the same cities.
Depending on the cruise line and sailing, you can find classic Amsterdam and Basel routes, itineraries built around the Rhine Gorge, Christmas market sailings, and longer cruises that combine the Rhine with other rivers.
Cruise lines name these itineraries differently, and the exact route, ship, sailing date, and inclusions can change from season to season.

The classic Rhine sailing runs between Amsterdam and Basel, typically over about seven nights, and most cruise lines offer it in both directions.
The direction is worth deciding deliberately.
If you want to begin in Amsterdam and finish in Switzerland, Amsterdam to Basel makes a natural pairing with a Lucerne or Zurich extension. If you would rather end in Amsterdam, or your flights work better into Zurich or Basel, Basel to Amsterdam may fit better.
