Mekong River Cruise Advisor

Most travelers who contact us about the Mekong already know why they want to go. It might be sunrise at Angkor Wat, the floating markets and waterways of the Mekong Delta, or the chance to see everyday life in Vietnam and Cambodia from the river rather than a tour bus.

The harder part is deciding how. Mekong cruises that look alike on paper can differ a great deal in route, ship, cabin, time ashore, and how much of the trip happens on land. You also need to fit the sailing around long-haul flights, a stay in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, and time in Siem Reap.

As your Mekong River Cruise Advisor, Rosedale Travel helps you make those decisions. We compare the cruise lines and sailings that suit your priorities, explain the trade-offs clearly, and coordinate the wider journey: flights, hotels, transfers, excursions, visas, travel insurance, and pre- and post-cruise time in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Rosedale Travel is a Virtuoso member agency and a Certified Tauck Advisor based in Austin, Texas.

I recently had the experience of my daughter’s high school graduation trip to Croatia planned by Rachel Baumgartner. It was amazing!! We had another family along with us and Rachel took so much time learning what was important to us, researching extensively the best fit for us regarding hotels, transfers, restaurants, excursions and more! The entire trip was seamless!! And during the trip she checked in on us and was quick to respond with any questions we had. I highly recommend Rachel and Rosedale Travel!!!

Laura Spagnolo recently (fall 2025) planned an absolutely unforgettable group trip to Argentina. I travel frequently and this is the first trip I did not have to do or think about a single piece of the itinerary. I took my 12 yr old son, along with a few other families, on a planned group trip to Buenos Aires and iguazu falls. Starting with the preparation for the visit and Everything from city excursions, to soccer matches and stadium tours, to art centers, dinners out, fantastic hotels, experiencing the falls, and the ease with transfers and domestic flights ...it could NOT have been better. I will not plan trips without Rosedale travel from now on!! Thank you!

Rosedale travel was able to hook me up with a last minute excellent trip to Iceland. Kirsten worked with me to make sure everything we wanted to do got done, and even suggested some things I’d never heard of which I'm glad we did! I’ll be using Rosedale travel again in the near future!

Five stars aren't enough for Rachel! She delivered the most amazing and stress-free adventure for our son's 30th birthday trip to Moab! She helped with flights and booked a fantastic place to stay, but the lineup of incredible adventures she put together was the highlight. Our adventure loving son had a blast! Before we left, a physical folder with all our documents was delivered, and every detail was also available on a convenient app. Rachel was available for all our questions during planning and checked in with us during and after our trip! I will be using her services again and recommending her to everyone I know.

Not only is Rachel Baumgartner the best travel advisor I've ever had the pleasure of working with, but she is also one of the best individuals I have ever had the pleasure of working with. From start to finish, there is not a single thing she missed. She went above and beyond on everything possible and exceeded my expectations. She helped me plan my bachelorette, my fiance's bachelor party, and our honeymoon. I cannot recommend Rachel enough to anyone looking to plan travel. I am forever grateful to her for helping me to plan the trip of my dreams!

Kirsten at Rosedale planned our family trip to Greece. It was our first time using a travel agent but definitely won't be our last! Kirsten made the trip to easy and stress free! She listened to all our "wants" and built the perfect vacation for our family of 5. The excursions she booked were amazing - both were great companies to explore Greece with and we learned so much from our guides. The hotels and resorts she booked for us were beautiful properites and the extra perks (like welcome baskets and food vouchers) that we got from booking with Kirsten were a wonderful bonus! Don't hesitate to use Kirsten to design your next vacation - you will be so glad you did!

Kirstin was amazing! My sister and I had 17 tabs open trying to figure out connecting flights and/or trains in Europe to no avail! I reached out to her for the first time hoping that she could somehow solve this mystery and she did just that! She made it all work seamlessly. Going forward, I will never NOT travel without first consulting her. She had tips, ideas, suggestions, and solutions! She was easy to communicate with, affable, responsive to our desires and vision and followed through on everything she said. She asked for feedback afterwards, and I shared the one thing I wished had happened. I wish we had gotten the itinerary in paper prior to departure. She and I miscommunicated about that as I had handled all stateside flights prior to international flights so she didn't know our actual date of departure. Highly recommend.

KIrsten Billhardt of Rosedale Travel did a fabulous job of planning and organizing our first trip to Scandinavia; she even figured out a way to work in a side trip to northern Germany within a 11-day (including flights) timeframe! It's been five months since we went, and we're still raving about the variety of experiences including outdoor excursions, city explorations, historical site and special attraction visits, different transportation modes, and delicious food (we loved the huge hotel breakfast buffets). We highly recommend working with Kirsten!

What Does a Mekong River Cruise Advisor Actually Do?

A Mekong cruise involves more moving parts than most European sailings. It crosses two countries, often combines several days on land with the cruise itself, and depends on long-haul flights and regional connections. An advisor’s job is to help you make the decisions that shape the experience, in the right order.

Compare Cruise Lines and Itineraries

Several lines sail the lower Mekong between Vietnam and Cambodia, and their products are not interchangeable. Some sell a 7-night cruise on its own. Others build the cruise into a 12- to 15-night journey that includes Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh, and Siem Reap. We compare routes, ports, number of nights, and how each line structures the land portion, so you can see what you are actually choosing between.

Find a Ship and Cabin That Fit Your Priorities

Mekong ships are small. Most carry somewhere between about 60 and 125 guests, and several are all-suite. That means the differences between ships come down to atmosphere, onboard space, suite size, balcony style, dining, and service. We help you decide which of those matter to you and whether a higher cabin category is worth the price difference on a particular ship.

Review Excursions and Onboard Inclusions

Shore excursions on the Mekong usually mean small boats, village visits, markets, temples, and craft workshops, often in heat and humidity. We look at what is included, how active each excursion is, whether gentler options are offered, and what costs extra, such as drinks, gratuities, or specialty experiences.

Coordinate the Rest of Your Trip

The cruise is usually one part of a longer journey. We help you plan international flights, arrival timing, hotel stays, transfers between the ship and the cities, visa requirements, travel insurance, and extra time in Siem Reap, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, or elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

The decisions we help you work through

01

Which cruise line fits the way you like to travel

02

Whether a cruise-only sailing or a cruise-and-land journey suits you better

03

Which route and ports match the places you most want to see

04

How many nights to spend on the river, and how many on land

05

Which months suit your preferences for weather and river conditions

06

Which ship, cabin category, and balcony style are worth the investment

07

What is included in the fare and what you will pay for separately

08

How active you want the excursion program to be

09

How much time to add at Angkor Wat and Siem Reap

10

How to time international flights so you arrive rested and ahead of embarkation

11

Which visas and documents you will need for Vietnam and Cambodia

12

What travel insurance makes sense for a trip of this length and cost

How a Mekong River Cruise Differs From a European River Cruise

If you have sailed the Danube or the Rhine, the Mekong will feel familiar in some ways: a small ship, one unpack, and a different place each day. In other ways it is a very different journey, and it helps to know that going in.

Experience Daily Life Along the River

European river cruises tend to center on cathedrals, castles, and old-town walking tours. The Mekong experience is centered on the river itself and the people who live along it. Depending on the itinerary, you may visit floating markets, stilt-house villages, rice paddies, family-run workshops, and riverside communities, often by sampan or small boat.

Explore Vietnamese and Cambodian Culture

Itineraries commonly include Buddhist pagodas and monasteries, Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, former royal capitals such as Oudong, and the Mekong Delta’s markets and waterways around towns like Cai Be, Sa Dec, and Tan Chau. Many itineraries also include sites connected to Cambodia’s and Vietnam’s twentieth-century history. We can help you understand what each itinerary includes so the program matches your interests.

Add Time for Angkor Wat and Siem Reap

For many travelers, Angkor is the reason for the trip. Siem Reap is not a river port on most sailings. On most current itineraries, guests travel between Siem Reap and the ship by road. That is one reason the way a line packages its land time matters so much (see Adding Siem Reap and Angkor Wat below).

Expect a different rhythm

Heat and humidity shape the day on the Mekong. Excursions often start early and many afternoons are spent on board while the ship sails. Docking is also less formal than in Europe. Rather than stepping off into a city center, you may go ashore by gangway onto a riverbank or by tender boat. We talk through the walking, steps, and boarding involved on each itinerary so you know what to expect.

Which Travelers Benefit Most From a Mekong River Cruise Advisor?

First-time river cruisers

If the Mekong will be your first river cruise, it helps to understand what is included, how the days are structured, and how the cruise connects with time on land. We explain the practical differences between lines before you commit.

Couples planning a special trip

Milestone anniversaries and long-awaited retirement trips deserve careful planning. We help you choose the right suite, add meaningful time in Siem Reap or Hanoi, and arrange the hotel stays around your sailing.

Experienced travelers comparing cruise lines

If you have sailed in Europe with Viking, AmaWaterways, Uniworld, Scenic, or Tauck, you may assume the Mekong product will feel the same. The ships, inclusions, and land programs often differ. We compare them for you beyond the advertised fare.

Culture and history enthusiasts

If temples, Khmer history, local crafts, and daily life are the priority, the excursion program and expertise of the guides matter more than the ship. We look closely at what each itinerary includes ashore.

Travelers adding Angkor Wat to their journey

If Angkor is non-negotiable, we make sure the itinerary gives you enough time there and plan the transfer, hotel, and guide around it.

Active travelers

Some lines offer biking, kayaking, and longer walks on selected days, alongside gentler options. We check what is actually available on each sailing.

Travelers who want help coordinating the details

International flights, two countries, visas, transfers, and a cruise schedule are a lot to manage on your own. We handle the coordination and keep track of the details through to departure.

Tauck

Tauck’s Mekong product is a land journey rather than a traditional river cruise. It includes three nights on the Aqua Mekong, with skiff excursions, village visits, and optional biking and kayaking, alongside multi-night hotel stays across Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. It suits travelers who want every detail handled and value the Tauck Director model. As Certified Tauck Advisors, this is a product we know well.

Viking

Viking packages its Mekong sailing as a full cruise-and-land journey, with hotel stays in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and time in Siem Reap included. It suits culturally curious travelers who want a structured trip with included touring and adults-only sailing.

AmaWaterways

AmaDara sails a 7-night route between Cambodia and the Mekong Delta, with optional land packages in Siem Reap, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hanoi. AmaWaterways offers tiered excursions, from gentle to active. That can work well for couples or groups with different activity levels.

Avalon Waterways

Avalon Saigon is an all-suite ship. Avalon offers a 7-night cruise between Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh as well as longer journeys that add Siem Reap, Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, or Bangkok. It’s a good option if you want a suite without moving into the highest fare tier.

Scenic

Scenic Spirit is a small all-suite ship with butler service and a broad, inclusive fare. Some itineraries include Scenic Enrich experiences at Angkor, such as special events at the temples. Inclusions vary by itinerary, so we confirm them for your departure.

Uniworld

Mekong Jewel is an all-suite ship with Uniworld’s distinctive boutique design. Its 14-night journeys combine a week on the river with hotel stays in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Siem Reap, and its fares are designed to be all-inclusive.

National Geographic–Lindblad Expeditions

Lindblad’s Mekong voyages emphasize learning and photography, with expedition staff and a certified photo instructor on board. They suit travelers who want depth and context more than onboard luxury. We confirm current departures when you inquire.

Which Mekong Cruise Itinerary Should You Choose?

Vietnam and Cambodia routes

Most Mekong cruises sail the lower Mekong between the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam and Cambodia. The cruise portion commonly runs between the delta (often around My Tho) and Phnom Penh or Kampong Cham, with ports such as Cai Be, Sa Dec, Tan Chau, Chau Doc, Oudong, Kampong Tralach, Wat Hanchey, and Angkor Ban, depending on the line and direction. Ho Chi Minh City and Siem Reap are usually reached by road.

Not every itinerary visits every port. Two sailings with similar names can include different stops and different amounts of time ashore, so we compare the day-by-day schedule rather than the port list alone.

Cruise-only or cruise-and-land?

This is often the most important choice:

  • Cruise-only sailings (typically 7 nights) give you flexibility to design your own time before and after, with hotels and guides chosen to suit you.
  • Cruise-and-land journeys (typically 12 to 15 nights or more) bundle hotel stays, touring, and internal flights into one package. They are simpler to book but less flexible.

We help you weigh which approach fits your travel style, and we can build a fully tailored land program around a cruise-only sailing if that’s the better fit.

Cruise duration and time ashore

Most Mekong cruises spend around a week on the river. Total trip length, including flights and land time, is often two to three weeks. We look at how many full days you have in each place, how much time is spent in transit, and whether the pace suits you.

Embarkation and disembarkation

Embarkation points vary by line, direction, and season. Some sailings begin near Siem Reap with a road transfer to the ship, others begin in the Mekong Delta after a transfer from Ho Chi Minh City. We confirm where your ship actually starts and ends, then plan your flights and hotels around it.

Which itinerary might suit you?

First trip to Southeast Asia

A cruise-and-land journey that includes Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh, and Siem Reap, with guiding throughout.

Angkor is the priority

An itinerary or extension with at least two to three full days in Siem Reap.

You want to see more of Vietnam

A package or custom extension that adds Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, or Hoi An.

You prefer flexibility

A 7-night cruise with independently planned hotel stays before and after.

You want to learn and photograph

An expedition-style voyage with expert staff.

You want everything handled

An escorted journey such as Tauck’s.

Already have sailing in mind? Send it to us. We will review the itinerary and tell you what it includes, what it leaves out, and how it compares with similar options.

When Is the Best Time for a Mekong River Cruise?

November through February

November through February is a useful starting point for most travelers. This part of the dry season generally brings lower rainfall and somewhat cooler, more comfortable temperatures, which matters when you are exploring temples and villages in the open. It is also the most popular period, so the best suites tend to book early.

Dry season and wet season

Season

Approximate months

What to expect

Dry season

November–April

Lower rainfall. Cooler early in the season, then increasingly hot from March onward.

Wet season

May–October

Higher humidity, regular rain showers, greener landscapes, and rising river levels.

Popular window

November–February

Generally the most comfortable weather for sightseeing.

How seasonal river conditions affect your route

The Mekong rises and falls significantly through the year. Water levels typically build through the wet season and drop through the dry season. These changes can affect which stretches the ship can navigate, especially in Cambodia, and can change where you embark, which ports you visit, and how much of the journey happens by road.

Cruise lines plan for this, and adjustments usually mean a coach transfer or a different port rather than a cancelled trip. Still, it is worth understanding before you book.

Why your specific sailing matters

The most comfortable weather and the most complete river routing don’t always fall in the same weeks. Rather than recommending dates based on the season alone, we look at the specific departure: its published route, where it embarks, and how the line typically handles changing water levels at that time of year.

Adding Siem Reap and Angkor Wat to Your Mekong Journey

The Angkor temple complex is one of the great sights in Southeast Asia, and most travelers don’t want to rush it. Some itineraries include Siem Reap in the package, others offer it as a pre- or post-cruise extension, and some leave it to you.

We help you evaluate:

We can also extend your journey to Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, Luang Prabang in Laos, or Bangkok, depending on how much time you have.

What Does a Mekong River Cruise Really Cost?

The advertised fare is only part of the picture. Two cruises with a similar headline price can produce very different totals once you account for what each includes. We compare the full trip, not just the cruise fare.

What to compare:

“All-inclusive” doesn’t always mean every expense is covered. We give you an apples-to-apples comparison so you can see which option offers better value for what you care about.

The Details That Shape the Experience

01

Choosing the right ship

On a small Mekong ship, atmosphere matters. Consider guest count, public spaces, the pool or sun deck, dining venues, spa, and how the line manages heat on deck and ashore. If mobility is a concern, ask about elevators, gangways, and riverbank landings.

02

Choosing the right cabin

Look at suite size, balcony style (French balcony or step-out balcony), deck location, and whether a higher category offers enough extra value on that ship. Larger suites can make a real difference on a warm-weather cruise when you spend more time on board in the afternoon.

03

Planning shore excursions

Excursions may include sampan rides, markets, pagodas, workshops, village walks, cycling, and cultural performances. We help you choose based on your activity level, interests, and tolerance for heat, and flag when excursion and dining reservations open.

04

Flights, hotels, and transfers

We generally recommend arriving at least one day, and ideally two, before your cruise or tour begins. The flight from the U.S. is long, the time difference is significant, and an overnight buffer gives you room if a flight is delayed. River ships and escorted tours operate on fixed schedules and cannot wait for late arrivals.

05

Visas, documents, and travel insurance

U.S. citizens need a passport valid well beyond their travel dates and visas for both Vietnam and Cambodia. We flag the requirements at booking and help you through the process. We also discuss travel insurance with every client. For a trip of this length, a policy that covers cancellation, interruption, delays, missed connections, and medical evacuation is worth considering carefully.

What Happens After You Book?

We don’t disappear once the deposit is paid. Between booking and departure, we:

While you are traveling, we are available if something comes up, though we ask for a little grace on time zones. When you return, we follow up on anything outstanding, such as refunds for cancelled excursions, and save your preferences for the next trip.

Why Plan Your Mekong Cruise With Rosedale Travel?

Certified Tauck Advisor

Kirsten has completed Tauck Academy training. New-to-Tauck guests booking a qualifying Tauck journey through Rosedale may receive a complimentary pre- or post-trip hotel night. We confirm whether a specific booking qualifies.

Virtuoso Member Agency

Virtuoso amenities are available only when you book through a Virtuoso advisor. Depending on the cruise line and departure, qualifying bookings may include onboard credit, hosted receptions, or other benefits. At Virtuoso hotels in Siem Reap, Ho Chi Minh City, or Hanoi, benefits may include daily breakfast, room upgrades when available, and flexible check-in or check-out. Amenities vary by booking, so we confirm exactly what applies to yours.

We Compare Multiple Cruise Lines

We think of ourselves as matchmakers. We book all of the lines we represent, with no incentive to steer you toward any one of them. We recommend the option that fits your interests, budget, and travel style, and we explain why. You can see how the lines compare in our river cruise line comparison.

We Stay Involved

We are a boutique agency that values long-term relationships. You will work with an advisor who knows your booking, before you travel, while you are away, and after you return.

How Our Mekong Cruise Planning Process Works

Listen

01

We start with a call of about 30 minutes. Before we discuss ships, we want to understand you: why the Mekong appeals to you, who you are traveling with, your preferred dates and budget, previous cruise experience, how active you like to be, cabin preferences, and any mobility, dietary, or travel concerns.

Narrow the Options

02

Within about a week, often sooner, we come back with curated recommendations. We match what we heard to the right cruise line, itinerary, ship, cabin category, and travel insurance, and explain our reasoning. This isn’t a brochure dump.

Refine

03

We go back and forth until we land on the right fit. We explain the trade-offs, what each fare includes, where a cabin upgrade adds value, and how Siem Reap and other extensions fit. Once you are ready, we handle the booking.

Coordinate the Details

04

We build the full trip around your sailing, monitor your booking through departure, support you while you travel, and follow up when you are home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a Mekong River Cruise Advisor do?

A Mekong River Cruise Advisor helps you choose the right cruise line, itinerary, ship, cabin, and departure for a Vietnam and Cambodia river journey, then coordinates the rest of the trip. That includes flights, hotels, transfers, visas, insurance, and time in places like Siem Reap. The goal is a trip that fits how you want to travel, not just a cruise booking.

Which countries does a Mekong River cruise visit?

Most Mekong river cruises sail the lower Mekong through Vietnam and Cambodia. Cruise-and-land packages often add Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, or Siem Reap, and some journeys include Laos or Thailand. The exact ports depend on the line, direction, and season.

Which cruise lines offer Mekong River cruises?

Lines currently offering Mekong programs include Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Scenic, Uniworld, and National Geographic–Lindblad Expeditions, and Tauck includes a Mekong cruise within a broader land journey. They differ in ship size, cabin style, inclusions, and how much of the trip is spent on land. We help you compare them for your dates.

When is the best time for a Mekong River cruise?

Many travelers prefer November through February, when conditions are generally drier and more comfortable. The best dates also depend on your route, because river levels change through the year and can affect navigation, particularly in Cambodia. We review the specific sailing rather than recommending dates on the season alone.

How long is a typical Vietnam and Cambodia river cruise?

The river portion is usually about 7 nights. Cruise-and-land journeys commonly run 12 to 15 nights or longer, and total travel time from the U.S. is often two to three weeks.

Can I visit Angkor Wat on a Mekong River cruise?

Yes, but Angkor Wat is not on the river. Some itineraries include time in Siem Reap, while others offer it as an extension. Guests usually travel between Siem Reap and the ship by road. We help you plan enough time there and arrange the hotel, guides, and transfers.

What is typically included in a luxury Mekong River cruise?

Fares generally include your cabin or suite, meals on board, and at least some guided excursions. Depending on the line, they may also include drinks, gratuities, hotel stays, internal flights, and touring on land. International flights, visas, and travel insurance are typically extra. We compare inclusions line by line so there are no surprises.

What happens if water levels affect the itinerary?

Cruise lines adjust routes when water levels require it. That usually means changing the embarkation point, swapping a port, or replacing a stretch of sailing with a coach transfer. We explain how this tends to work for your departure and recommend insurance that protects your investment.

Can Rosedale arrange flights, hotels, and transfers?

Yes. We coordinate international and regional flights, pre- and post-cruise hotels, transfers, private guides, visas, and travel insurance. This lets you work with one advisor for the whole journey.

How far in advance should I plan a Mekong River cruise?

For popular months and the best suites, starting 9 to 12 months ahead is a comfortable window. Some departures in the November to February period book earlier. Availability varies, so it is worth starting the conversation early.

Do I need to know which cruise line I want before contacting you?

No. Many clients come to us with a general idea, such as “Vietnam and Cambodia, sometime next winter,” and we help narrow it down. You are also welcome to send us a sailing you already like, and we will review it.

Can a solo traveler book a Mekong river cruise?

Yes. Single supplements and solo cabin availability vary by line and departure. We look for the options that work best for solo travelers on your dates.

Do you charge a planning fee?

Yes. Our planning fee is disclosed upfront and is separate from the cruise fare. We explain it during your first consultation.

How do I get started?

Schedule a 30-minute consultation. We will talk through your interests, travel companions, dates, budget, and any practical considerations, then come back within about a week with personalized recommendations.
