Mediterranean Yacht Charter Specialist

A Mediterranean crewed yacht charter works best for travelers who value privacy, flexibility, and personalized service more than the fixed structure of a resort or cruise.

The challenge is that booking the right charter requires more than selecting the yacht that looks best online. You need to match the destination, yacht type, crew, cabin layout, itinerary, travel dates, and total budget to the way your group actually wants to spend the week.

Greece, Croatia, the Amalfi Coast, the French Riviera, the Balearic Islands, and Turkey are not interchangeable charter destinations. A family looking for calm passages and historic towns requires a different recommendation from a group planning its week around Ibiza beach clubs, Monaco restaurants, or long days exploring the Cyclades.

The advertised charter rate is also only the beginning of the budget conversation. Most Mediterranean charters operate under a base-rate-plus-expenses structure. The yacht and crew are covered by the base charter fee, while fuel, provisioning, beverages, marina charges, and other operating costs are normally paid through an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA. VAT and crew gratuity are generally separate.

As your Mediterranean Luxury Yacht Charter Specialist, Rosedale Travel helps you work through these decisions before you commit to a charter costing $30,000, $75,000, or significantly more.

I recently had the experience of my daughter’s high school graduation trip to Croatia planned by Rachel Baumgartner. It was amazing!! We had another family along with us and Rachel took so much time learning what was important to us, researching extensively the best fit for us regarding hotels, transfers, restaurants, excursions and more! The entire trip was seamless!! And during the trip she checked in on us and was quick to respond with any questions we had. I highly recommend Rachel and Rosedale Travel!!!

Laura Spagnolo recently (fall 2025) planned an absolutely unforgettable group trip to Argentina. I travel frequently and this is the first trip I did not have to do or think about a single piece of the itinerary. I took my 12 yr old son, along with a few other families, on a planned group trip to Buenos Aires and iguazu falls. Starting with the preparation for the visit and Everything from city excursions, to soccer matches and stadium tours, to art centers, dinners out, fantastic hotels, experiencing the falls, and the ease with transfers and domestic flights ...it could NOT have been better. I will not plan trips without Rosedale travel from now on!! Thank you!

Five stars aren't enough for Rachel! She delivered the most amazing and stress-free adventure for our son's 30th birthday trip to Moab! She helped with flights and booked a fantastic place to stay, but the lineup of incredible adventures she put together was the highlight. Our adventure loving son had a blast! Before we left, a physical folder with all our documents was delivered, and every detail was also available on a convenient app. Rachel was available for all our questions during planning and checked in with us during and after our trip! I will be using her services again and recommending her to everyone I know.

Not only is Rachel Baumgartner the best travel advisor I've ever had the pleasure of working with, but she is also one of the best individuals I have ever had the pleasure of working with. From start to finish, there is not a single thing she missed. She went above and beyond on everything possible and exceeded my expectations. She helped me plan my bachelorette, my fiance's bachelor party, and our honeymoon. I cannot recommend Rachel enough to anyone looking to plan travel. I am forever grateful to her for helping me to plan the trip of my dreams!

Kirsten at Rosedale planned our family trip to Greece. It was our first time using a travel agent but definitely won't be our last! Kirsten made the trip to easy and stress free! She listened to all our "wants" and built the perfect vacation for our family of 5. The excursions she booked were amazing - both were great companies to explore Greece with and we learned so much from our guides. The hotels and resorts she booked for us were beautiful properites and the extra perks (like welcome baskets and food vouchers) that we got from booking with Kirsten were a wonderful bonus! Don't hesitate to use Kirsten to design your next vacation - you will be so glad you did!

Kirstin was amazing! My sister and I had 17 tabs open trying to figure out connecting flights and/or trains in Europe to no avail! I reached out to her for the first time hoping that she could somehow solve this mystery and she did just that! She made it all work seamlessly. Going forward, I will never NOT travel without first consulting her. She had tips, ideas, suggestions, and solutions! She was easy to communicate with, affable, responsive to our desires and vision and followed through on everything she said. She asked for feedback afterwards, and I shared the one thing I wished had happened. I wish we had gotten the itinerary in paper prior to departure. She and I miscommunicated about that as I had handled all stateside flights prior to international flights so she didn't know our actual date of departure. Highly recommend.

KIrsten Billhardt of Rosedale Travel did a fabulous job of planning and organizing our first trip to Scandinavia; she even figured out a way to work in a side trip to northern Germany within a 11-day (including flights) timeframe! It's been five months since we went, and we're still raving about the variety of experiences including outdoor excursions, city explorations, historical site and special attraction visits, different transportation modes, and delicious food (we loved the huge hotel breakfast buffets). We highly recommend working with Kirsten!

Rosedale knows the secret sauce of memorable travel.

Why Work With Rosedale Travel Before Choosing a Yacht

Two yachts with similar weekly rates can produce completely different vacations.

One may have a cabin layout that works comfortably for four couples but creates problems for a multi-generational family. Another may have an experienced crew, but not the water toys or stabilizers your group considers essential. A third may be a good yacht in the wrong cruising area for the itinerary you want.

These differences are difficult to identify from photographs, specifications, and online availability calendars.

Clients often begin by comparing dozens of yachts before deciding whether the destination itself matches their preferred pace. We reverse that process. The destination, group dynamics, travel style, and realistic total budget should be established before a yacht shortlist is created.

Before recommending a Mediterranean charter, we help you determine:

  • Which Mediterranean destination matches your preferred pace
  • How much time your group wants aboard versus ashore
  • Whether your dates fall within peak or shoulder season
  • Whether a sailing yacht, catamaran, motor yacht, or Turkish gulet fits the itinerary
  • Which cabin arrangement works for your mix of couples, children, and individual travelers
  • Whether stability, speed, water access, deck space, or onboard amenities matter most
  • What the charter is likely to cost after APA, VAT, gratuity, and marina expenses
  • Whether the yacht’s crew has experience in the proposed cruising area
  • Whether your group’s expectations are compatible enough for a private charter

Matching the yacht matters more than simply finding one that is available. A strong match creates a private and flexible week. A poor match can feel expensive, confined, or unnecessarily rushed, even when the yacht itself is attractive.

What Rosedale Travel’s Virtuoso and Star Ocean Yachts Relationships Mean

Rosedale Travel works with Star Ocean Yachts as its preferred yacht broker. Star Ocean Yachts is a full-service yacht brokerage and management company offering charter, yacht sales, and management services.

Rather than limiting recommendations to a single charter fleet, this relationship allows Rosedale Travel to evaluate yachts available through a wider brokerage network. The objective is not to produce the longest list of available vessels. It is to identify the strongest options for your group and explain where each match is convincing or uncertain.

Depending on the yacht and availability, the review may include:

Rosedale Travel remains your primary point of contact. Star Ocean Yachts handles the broker relationship with the yacht owner or management company, while Rosedale coordinates the charter within the wider travel plan.

Who a Mediterranean Yacht Charter Works Best For

A Mediterranean crewed yacht charter can be an excellent fit for the following travelers.

Families Seeking Time Together Without a Fixed Resort Schedule

A yacht gives a family one private base, one crew, and an itinerary that can be adjusted around energy levels, meals, swimming, and time ashore.

Greece’s Ionian Islands and Croatia’s Dalmatian coast are often better starting points for families than more exposed or fast-paced destinations. They offer a practical balance of swimming, shorter passages, historic towns, and onboard time.

Children should be comfortable around water, able to follow crew safety instructions, and capable of using tenders or boarding platforms with appropriate supervision.

Couples and Friends Celebrating a Milestone

A charter can work exceptionally well for milestone birthdays, anniversaries, family reunions, or groups of friends who want privacy without separating into different hotel rooms and daily schedules.

The group still needs a shared understanding of pace. Some guests may want restaurants and nightlife, while others prefer dinners aboard and quiet anchorages. Those preferences should be discussed before selecting the destination and yacht.

Travelers Who Have Already Experienced the Region's Resorts

A yacht offers a different structure from a resort. Instead of returning to the same property every evening, your accommodation, chef, crew, and equipment travel with you.

This is valuable for travelers who want to explore multiple islands or coastal towns without repeatedly packing, checking out, and arranging transfers.

Groups of Six to Ten Sharing the Charter Cost

The economics of a private charter often become more favorable when the cost is shared across several cabins.

A $50,000 base rate appears different when divided between ten guests than when considered as a two-person vacation. However, the group should evaluate the all-in cost, not only the base rate.

Travelers Who Prefer Flexibility Over a Set Itinerary

A charter itinerary is planned in advance, but it is not fixed in the same way as a cruise schedule.

The captain may adjust the route based on wind, sea conditions, marina availability, or the group’s preferences. Travelers who enjoy choosing between an additional swim, a longer lunch ashore, or an earlier departure for the next anchorage usually respond well to this flexibility.

Caribbean Charter Guests Considering the Mediterranean

Travelers who have chartered successfully in the Caribbean should not assume the Mediterranean follows the same pricing or itinerary structure.

Many crewed Caribbean catamaran charters are quoted on an all-inclusive basis. Mediterranean charters commonly separate the base fee, APA, VAT, and gratuity. Distances, marina use, time ashore, and local cruising conditions may also require a different yacht choice.

Who Should Consider Another Vacation

A Mediterranean yacht charter is not right for every traveler or every group.

Travelers Whose Main Priority Is the Lowest Cost

A crewed charter is a private-service vacation with significant operating expenses. Travelers primarily focused on securing the lowest nightly or per-person rate will usually receive more value from a resort, cruise, villa, or conventional hotel itinerary.

Groups Wanting Constant Sightseeing

A charter can include meaningful time ashore, but it should not be treated as a floating hotel used only for transportation between a long list of land attractions.

If every day needs to include multiple tours, museums, restaurants, and nightlife venues, a land itinerary may provide more time and logistical efficiency.

Guests Expecting a Completely Fixed Route

Weather and sea conditions remain part of every yacht charter. A captain may need to replace an exposed anchorage with a protected alternative or change the sequence of ports.

Travelers who would consider any itinerary change a failure may be more comfortable with a land-based vacation.

Groups With Conflicting Expectations

A resort can accommodate different interests because guests can separate throughout the day. A yacht, commonly offering four to six guest cabins, concentrates the group into one shared environment.

When some guests want nightlife, others want quiet anchorages, and others expect intensive sightseeing, those differences should be resolved before booking.

Motion-Sensitive Guests Set on Exposed Cruising Areas

The Cyclades can experience strong Meltemi winds during the summer, especially in July and August.

That does not automatically rule out Greece, but it may lead us to recommend the Ionian Islands, the Saronic Gulf, Croatia, Turkey, a motor yacht with suitable stabilization, or different travel dates.

What a Mediterranean Charter Is Actually Like

A crewed charter provides more flexibility than a resort, but it is not an entirely unstructured vacation.

Before departure, the captain reviews your preferred route, weather conditions, fuel requirements, marina plans, and the group’s priorities. During the week, those plans are refined according to actual cruising conditions.

A typical day may include a morning at anchor, swimming or water activities, lunch aboard, and an afternoon or evening ashore. Another day may focus almost entirely on a waterfront town, restaurant reservation, historic site, or beach club.

The balance depends on the destination and the group.

Private Chef Dining Versus Resort Dining

The chef plans provisioning around a preference sheet completed before departure. Dietary requirements, preferred cuisines, breakfast habits, beverages, allergies, and celebration requests should be communicated clearly.

Some groups want most meals aboard. Others intentionally plan several dinners ashore. The right balance depends on the destination, restaurant availability, and whether the group considers dining ashore part of the purpose of the itinerary.

A private chef provides personalization and convenience, but guests should still expect practical limitations. Galley size, provisioning access, yacht equipment, and local supply availability vary.

Privacy Without Complete Isolation

A crewed yacht is private from other travelers, but the crew is present throughout the charter.

The captain, chef, deck crew, and interior crew work around the group while maintaining service and operating the yacht. Guests who want privacy should choose a yacht whose layout separates guest and crew circulation as effectively as possible.

Water Toys Versus Destination Exploration

Water toys matter greatly to some families and very little to groups spending most afternoons ashore.

Paddleboards, kayaks, snorkeling equipment, wakeboards, inflatable platforms, Seabobs, e-foils, and personal watercraft are not automatically available on every yacht. The yacht’s current specification should be reviewed before booking, including any age, licensing, local-use, or supervision restrictions.

Flexible Itinerary Versus Guaranteed Ports

A charter offers route flexibility, not guaranteed access to every requested marina or anchorage.

Weather, local regulations, event schedules, port congestion, and berth availability can affect the final route. An experienced captain will normally offer alternatives, but the group should board with enough flexibility to enjoy them.

Mediterranean Yacht Types

Choosing between a sailing catamaran, monohull, motor yacht, and gulet affects the pace, comfort, itinerary, and total cost of the charter.

Sailing Catamaran

A sailing catamaran provides a wide platform, generous deck space, separate hull accommodation, and relatively efficient fuel use.

It often works well for

  • Families
  • Groups prioritizing stability at anchor
  • Guests wanting easy water access
  • Groups who value communal deck space
  • Itineraries with shorter distances between stops
  • Travelers who do not need high cruising speeds

Two catamarans with similar pricing can still differ substantially. Cabin size, crew quality, interior volume, sailing performance, water toys, air-conditioning, and maintenance condition should all be compared.

Sailing Monohull

A sailing monohull is most appropriate when sailing itself is an important part of the experience.

It may suit:

  • Experienced sailors
  • Groups who enjoy a traditional sailing feel
  • Travelers who prefer the character of a monohull
  • Itineraries where speed is less important
  • Smaller groups comfortable with a more compact layout

A monohull generally heels under sail and may move more at anchor than a catamaran. That experience appeals to sailing-focused guests but may not be right for a motion-sensitive group.

Motor Yacht

A motor yacht covers more distance in less time and can be the stronger choice for itineraries involving specific ports, compact arrival windows, or destinations where reaching an anchorage before peak congestion matters.

It often works well for:

  • Groups prioritizing speed
  • Amalfi Coast itineraries
  • French Riviera port-focused charters
  • Multi-island routes with longer distances
  • Guests wanting larger crewed-service environments
  • Travelers requiring specific stabilization or comfort features

Motor yachts normally require a larger APA because fuel consumption can be significantly higher. A lower motor-yacht base rate does not necessarily mean a lower total cost than a more expensive sailing yacht.

Turkish Gulet

A gulet is a traditional wooden motor-sailer associated with Turkey’s coastal boatbuilding heritage.

Gulets commonly provide:

  • Large communal deck areas
  • Multiple designated cabins
  • A relaxed cruising pace
  • Strong value for larger groups
  • Itineraries along the Turquoise Coast
  • A different onboard style from a modern catamaran or motor yacht

Trade-offs to consider

Gulets vary substantially in age, refit quality, crew standards, air-conditioning arrangements, and operating policies. Some limit generator or air-conditioning hours, so these details should be confirmed in the contract.

For 2026 Turkish charters, the certified overnight guest capacity must also be checked carefully. Current operator guidance reports that salon and communal spaces may no longer be counted as guest sleeping accommodation. Rosedale Travel and the charter broker will confirm the vessel’s licensed cabin capacity before recommending it.

Mediterranean Charter Season: Choosing the Right Month

The main Mediterranean charter season generally runs from May through October, although actual operating periods vary by yacht and region.

May and June

May and June can offer strong availability, moderate temperatures, and less pressure at popular anchorages than July and August.

June is often particularly attractive in the Western Mediterranean because restaurants and seasonal services are operating, while peak summer demand has not fully arrived.

Charter rates may be lower than peak-season rates, but the difference is yacht-specific. A fixed percentage reduction should never be assumed until the yacht’s rate sheet has been reviewed.

July and August

July and August are peak charter months across the Mediterranean.

Travelers should expect:

  • Higher base rates
  • More limited availability
  • Busier anchorages
  • Greater marina competition
  • Higher demand for established crews
  • More pressure around popular ports and beach clubs

For peak-season charters, especially when the group has fixed dates or specific yacht requirements, planning six to twelve months in advance provides a stronger selection.

September and October

September can provide warm sea temperatures, fewer crowds, and good cruising conditions in many regions.

Croatia, Greece, and Turkey often maintain a strong charter season into September and, depending on the yacht and weather, parts of October. Western Mediterranean operations may begin reducing after September.

Major Event Dates

The Cannes Film Festival and Monaco Grand Prix create separate demand patterns during May.

Yacht availability, marina access, event credentials, berthing, and pricing can differ substantially from an ordinary French Riviera charter. These dates require an event-specific planning conversation rather than a standard yacht search.

Mediterranean Yacht Charter Destinations

The Mediterranean is not one yacht charter region. The correct destination depends on how the group wants to divide its time between cruising, swimming, sightseeing, restaurants, nightlife, and private time aboard.

Greece Yacht Charter

Greece offers several distinct charter regions within one country, including the Cyclades, Saronic Gulf, Ionian Islands, Dodecanese, and Crete.

Choose the Cyclades when:

  • Mykonos, Santorini, Milos, Naxos, or Paros are priorities
  • The group accepts longer open-water passages
  • Stronger summer wind is not a major concern
  • The itinerary is built around iconic islands and lively ports
  • The yacht type can support the planned distances

Choose the Ionian or Saronic Gulf when:

  • The group includes first-time charter guests
  • Shorter passages are preferred
  • Guests have motion-sensitivity concerns
  • The itinerary should balance swimming with towns and dining
  • Families want a less demanding introduction to Greece

Greek charter VAT depends on the yacht’s licensing, charter structure, and itinerary. An effective rate between approximately 5.2% and 13% may apply to eligible licensed yachts, but the correct amount must be confirmed for the specific charter.

Croatia Yacht Charter

Croatia’s Dalmatian coast combines island-hopping, historic towns, swimming access, and comparatively manageable cruising distances.

Many itineraries begin around Split and explore central Dalmatian islands. Others operate one-way toward Dubrovnik, which can create longer passages or repositioning charges depending on the yacht.

Croatia is one of Kirsten’s preferred recommendations for first-time Mediterranean charter clients because it can provide:

  • Calmer cruising than an exposed Cyclades itinerary
  • Shorter distances between islands
  • Historic towns with practical waterfront access
  • A useful balance between time aboard and ashore
  • Strong value compared with some Western Mediterranean regions

Croatian VAT is commonly quoted at 13% for yacht charters, but licensing and charter structure should still be confirmed before contract.

Amalfi Coast Yacht Charter

An Amalfi Coast charter may include Capri, Positano, Amalfi, Praiano, Nerano, Ieranto Bay, and Li Galli without requiring the same open-water distances as some Greek routes.

The area is compact, but it is also highly congested during summer.

A motor yacht often makes more practical sense here because speed and maneuverability can help the captain reach popular locations before the busiest part of the day. Groups should still expect tender use, anchoring restrictions, heavy boat traffic, and limited berth availability.

Italian VAT has a standard rate of 22% for yacht charters, although the final treatment may depend on the itinerary and charter structure.

French Riviera Yacht Charter

The French Riviera works well for groups wanting Monaco, Cannes, Saint-Tropez, and Antibes alongside anchorages near Cap Ferrat, Villefranche-sur-Mer, and the Lérins Islands.

The first planning question is how much of the week should be spent in well-known ports versus at anchor.

Port-focused itineraries usually create higher fuel, berthing, restaurant, and transfer costs than a quieter sailing itinerary elsewhere in the Mediterranean. The French Riviera is typically among the most expensive Mediterranean charter regions, particularly for motor-yacht itineraries during peak dates.

France applies a standard 20% yacht-charter VAT rate, but the effective calculation can be affected by the yacht’s tax status, cruising route, and time outside applicable territorial waters.

Balearic Islands Yacht Charter

The Balearic Islands include Mallorca, Ibiza, Formentera, and Menorca.

They suit groups who want a combination of:

  • Beach clubs
  • Restaurants and nightlife
  • Protected anchorages
  • Quiet calas
  • Water activities
  • A more social atmosphere than Croatia or the Greek Ionian

The key decision is whether to concentrate on one island or combine several. A multi-island itinerary affects cruising time, fuel consumption, and the type of yacht required.

Spanish VAT is generally 21% for charters beginning in mainland Spain or the Balearics. Marina expenses in Ibiza and Puerto Portals can also create substantial APA usage.

Turkey Yacht Charter

Turkey offers several distinct cruising regions, including Bodrum, Göcek, Marmaris, Fethiye, Kaş, Kekova, and the Gulf of Gökova.

A gulet charter through the Gulf of Gökova creates a different experience from a motor-yacht itinerary toward the Greek islands or a longer route along the Lycian Coast.

Turkey often provides more cabin and communal deck space for the base rate than parts of the Western Mediterranean, particularly for groups considering a gulet.

The trade-offs may include slower cruising, varying refit standards, different air-conditioning policies, and yacht-specific operating limitations.

Turkish charter-tax treatment can vary according to the yacht’s flag, licensing, embarkation point, and charter structure. A 20% headline rate may apply, but it should not be presented as universal without confirming the individual yacht.

Mediterranean Versus Caribbean Yacht Charters

Travelers who have chartered in the Caribbean often assume the Mediterranean will follow the same model. The two experiences share the privacy and personalized service of a crewed yacht, but the financial and operational structures can differ.

All-Inclusive Pricing Versus APA

Many crewed Caribbean catamaran charters are priced on an all-inclusive basis. The published fee may include the yacht, crew, meals, standard beverages, and common water toys.

Mediterranean charters commonly use APA. The base rate covers the yacht and crew, while variable operating expenses are paid from a separate fund.

The Mediterranean therefore requires a more detailed total-cost calculation before comparing yachts.

VAT

Mediterranean charter VAT can add a substantial amount to the base fee.

The rate depends on the country, yacht licensing, embarkation point, route, flag, and contract structure. Rosedale Travel confirms the applicable treatment before asking a client to make a booking decision.

Cruising Distances

Some Caribbean charter areas allow relatively short passages between islands.

Mediterranean distances vary significantly. A Cyclades itinerary involving Mykonos, Milos, and Santorini requires a different planning approach from a Croatian island route or a week in the Saronic Gulf.

Time Ashore

Mediterranean charters often involve more historic towns, restaurants, beach clubs, and cultural stops than a typical Caribbean sailing week.

That can be a major advantage, but it also increases the importance of marina planning, tender access, reservations, and agreeing how much time the group wants on land.

Season

The Mediterranean season generally runs from late spring through early autumn. The Caribbean’s primary charter season generally runs during the Northern Hemisphere winter.

For travelers who enjoy chartering regularly, the two regions can complement each other rather than compete directly.

Mediterranean Yacht Charter Pricing

Mediterranean yacht charter pricing should always be evaluated as a total budget, not a headline base rate.

The following ranges are planning guides, not guaranteed availability.

Smaller Crewed Sailing Options: Approximately $15,000 to $25,000 Per Week

This range may include a smaller or older crewed sailing monohull or catamaran for approximately four to six guests.

Availability is more likely in destinations such as Greece, Croatia, or Turkey and may depend heavily on the yacht’s age, season, crew structure, and contract terms.

At this level, clients should review:

Mid-Range Charters: Approximately $30,000 to $75,000 Per Week

This range provides a broader selection of crewed sailing yachts, catamarans, and smaller motor yachts.

It is a common planning range for families and friend groups of six to ten guests. However, the total cost may be considerably higher once APA, VAT, and gratuity are included.

Higher-Luxury Charters: $100,000 or More Per Week

This range may include larger motor yachts, premium catamarans, and superyachts with more crew, greater interior volume, advanced stabilization, larger water-toy inventories, and more extensive guest facilities.

A higher base rate creates more possibilities, but it does not eliminate the need for careful matching. The crew, layout, maintenance condition, itinerary, and operating costs remain important.

Understanding APA

APA stands for Advance Provisioning Allowance.

It is an operating fund paid before departure and managed by the captain. It commonly covers:

  • Fuel for the main engines and generators
  • Food and beverages
  • Marina and berthing expenses
  • Local port charges
  • Tender fuel
  • Fuel used by motorized water toys
  • Special provisioning
  • Delivery or repositioning costs when applicable
  • Other charter-related variable expenses

APA is not automatically spent in full. The captain maintains an account of expenses, and unused funds are returned after the charter. If actual expenses exceed the funded amount, the difference is settled before disembarkation or according to the contract.

A typical planning range is:

  • Approximately 25% to 35% of the base fee for many sailing yachts and catamarans
  • Approximately 35% to 40% for many motor yachts

The actual percentage appears in the yacht’s charter terms and can be higher for fuel-intensive itineraries or unusual provisioning requests.

VAT and Gratuity

VAT is generally calculated separately from APA and normally applies to the base charter fee according to the relevant jurisdiction and charter structure.

  • Indicative headline or effective ranges include:
  • Croatia: commonly 13%
  • Greece: approximately 5.2% to 13% for qualifying licensed charters
  • France: standard rate of 20%, with possible route-dependent treatment
  • Spain: generally 21%
  • Italy: standard rate of 22%
  • Turkey: variable treatment that may reach 20%, depending on the yacht and structure

These figures should be treated as planning guidance, not a tax quotation. The correct VAT must be confirmed for the specific yacht and charter contract.

Crew gratuity is also separate. A planning range of approximately 10% to 15% of the base charter fee is common in the Mediterranean, although gratuity remains discretionary and should reflect service.

Realistic Total Cost Example

Consider a sailing catamaran in Croatia with the following assumptions:

  • Base charter fee: $50,000
  • APA at 30%: $15,000
  • Croatian VAT at 13%: $6,500
  • Crew gratuity at 12%: $6,000

The estimated total is approximately $77,500, excluding flights, transfers, hotels before or after the charter, and personal spending ashore.

This example is only valid when those exact percentages and terms apply. The purpose is to demonstrate why a $50,000 yacht should not be evaluated as a $50,000 vacation.

Rosedale Travel builds the total-cost estimate before presenting final yacht recommendations.

Speak with Rosedale Travel about the total budget your preferred yacht and destination are likely to require.

What the Base Charter Fee Generally Includes

Under common Mediterranean charter terms, the base fee generally includes:

  • Use of the yacht for the agreed charter period
  • Professional captain and crew
  • Crew wages
  • Yacht insurance
  • Standard navigation and safety equipment
  • Use of onboard amenities listed in the yacht specification
  • Use of listed water toys, subject to local rules and operating conditions
  • Normal yacht housekeeping and service

The yacht’s actual charter agreement controls what is included.

What Is Paid Through APA

The following are commonly paid from the APA rather than included in the base rate:

  • Fuel
  • Food
  • Beverages
  • Marina and berthing charges
  • Port fees
  • Tender fuel
  • Water-toy fuel
  • Special provisioning
  • Delivery and redelivery expenses where applicable

What Is Normally Additional

Expenses normally outside the base fee and APA may include:

  • VAT
  • Crew gratuity
  • Flights
  • Hotels before or after the charter
  • Private aviation
  • Airport and marina transfers
  • Personal shopping
  • Independent shore excursions
  • Restaurant meals ashore
  • Special equipment not carried by the yacht
  • Travel insurance
  • Passport, visa, or documentation costs

Rosedale Travel can coordinate flights, transfers, hotels, private aviation, and other pre- or post-charter arrangements as part of the wider trip.

We review the shortlist with you and compare the practical differences.

A yacht may be removed because the cabins do not work for the group. A destination may change because the planned route creates too much cruising time. A sailing yacht may be replaced with a motor yacht because the itinerary requires greater speed.

The recommendations are refined before a contract is signed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Mediterranean or Caribbean Better for a First Yacht Charter?

The Caribbean is often easier to budget because many crewed catamaran charters use an all-inclusive pricing model. The Mediterranean offers greater variation in historic towns, restaurants, island cultures, and time ashore, but APA and VAT make the total cost more complex.

For first-time Mediterranean guests with children or motion-sensitive travelers, Croatia, the Greek Ionian Islands, or the Saronic Gulf often provide a more comfortable introduction than a Cyclades-focused itinerary.

What Is APA and How Much Should I Budget?

APA is a pre-funded operating account managed by the captain to cover fuel, provisioning, beverages, marina expenses, and other variable charter costs.

Many sailing yachts and catamarans request approximately 25% to 35% of the base fee. Motor yachts commonly request approximately 35% to 40%. The percentage must be confirmed in the yacht’s charter terms.

Is Unused APA Refunded?

Yes. The captain accounts for expenses during the charter, and unused APA is returned to the charterer.

When expenses exceed the funded amount, the additional balance must be settled according to the charter agreement.

Does VAT Apply to Every Mediterranean Yacht Charter?

VAT generally applies to Mediterranean charters, but the effective rate and calculation depend on the country, yacht licensing, flag, embarkation point, route, and charter structure.

Rosedale Travel confirms the expected VAT for each recommended yacht before the client reviews the final contract.

How Far in Advance Should I Book?

For July and August, planning six to twelve months ahead generally provides better yacht and crew selection.

June and September may offer more flexibility, but early booking still matters when the group needs a specific number of equal cabins, a family-tested crew, particular water toys, or a specific embarkation port.

Is Crew Gratuity Included?

Crew gratuity is normally not included in the base fee or APA.

A planning range of approximately 10% to 15% of the base charter fee is common in the Mediterranean. Gratuity remains discretionary and is normally given to the captain for distribution among the crew.

Are Meals Included?

The chef and crew are included in the base fee, but the cost of food and beverages is normally paid through APA.

Meals are planned from the preference sheet. Some groups dine aboard most evenings, while others intentionally include restaurants ashore.

Are Water Toys Included?

Only equipment listed in the yacht’s current charter specification should be considered included.

Common equipment may include paddleboards, kayaks, snorkeling gear, towable toys, wakeboards, Seabobs, e-foils, or personal watercraft. Availability, local restrictions, guest licensing, and crew supervision vary.

Can a Couple Charter a Yacht Designed for Eight or Ten Guests?

Yes. The yacht is normally priced by the charter period rather than the number of guests.

A couple can charter a larger yacht for additional space, privacy, amenities, or crew attention. The decision depends on whether the total cost creates enough value for the experience they want.

What Happens if Weather Changes the Route?

The captain’s first obligations are safety and guest comfort.

Wind, sea conditions, port congestion, or local restrictions may require a change. The captain will normally suggest a protected anchorage or alternative port, but no advisor or broker should guarantee that every location on a proposed itinerary will be reached.

Is a Larger Yacht Always Better?

No. A larger yacht may provide more space, crew, amenities, and stability, but it can also create higher fuel, marina, and operating expenses.

A smaller yacht with the right layout and crew may produce a better experience than a larger yacht that does not fit the group’s priorities.
