COMO Shambhala Estate Wellness Travel Advisor

COMO Shambhala Estate is best suited to travelers who want quiet, nature, and personalized wellness guidance without committing to a physician-led medical program. The experience is more structured than an unprogramed resort stay, but far less clinical than SHA Wellness or an advanced diagnostics program at Canyon Ranch.

The estate sits in the jungle above Bali’s Ayung River and builds each Wellness Path around an individual consultation. Guests can focus on stress, sleep, gut health, fitness, nutrition, or traditional Ayurvedic care without having every hour dictated by a fixed activity calendar.

Rosedale Travel books COMO Shambhala Estate as a Virtuoso member agency. We help determine whether the resort fits your actual goal, recommend the right Wellness Path and accommodation category, coordinate important consultations before arrival, and apply preferred benefits that are not available through a standard direct booking.

I recently had the experience of my daughter’s high school graduation trip to Croatia planned by Rachel Baumgartner. It was amazing!! We had another family along with us and Rachel took so much time learning what was important to us, researching extensively the best fit for us regarding hotels, transfers, restaurants, excursions and more! The entire trip was seamless!! And during the trip she checked in on us and was quick to respond with any questions we had. I highly recommend Rachel and Rosedale Travel!!!

Laura Spagnolo recently (fall 2025) planned an absolutely unforgettable group trip to Argentina. I travel frequently and this is the first trip I did not have to do or think about a single piece of the itinerary. I took my 12 yr old son, along with a few other families, on a planned group trip to Buenos Aires and iguazu falls. Starting with the preparation for the visit and Everything from city excursions, to soccer matches and stadium tours, to art centers, dinners out, fantastic hotels, experiencing the falls, and the ease with transfers and domestic flights ...it could NOT have been better. I will not plan trips without Rosedale travel from now on!! Thank you!

Rosedale travel was able to hook me up with a last minute excellent trip to Iceland. Kirsten worked with me to make sure everything we wanted to do got done, and even suggested some things I’d never heard of which I'm glad we did! I’ll be using Rosedale travel again in the near future!

Five stars aren't enough for Rachel! She delivered the most amazing and stress-free adventure for our son's 30th birthday trip to Moab! She helped with flights and booked a fantastic place to stay, but the lineup of incredible adventures she put together was the highlight. Our adventure loving son had a blast! Before we left, a physical folder with all our documents was delivered, and every detail was also available on a convenient app. Rachel was available for all our questions during planning and checked in with us during and after our trip! I will be using her services again and recommending her to everyone I know.

Not only is Rachel Baumgartner the best travel advisor I've ever had the pleasure of working with, but she is also one of the best individuals I have ever had the pleasure of working with. From start to finish, there is not a single thing she missed. She went above and beyond on everything possible and exceeded my expectations. She helped me plan my bachelorette, my fiance's bachelor party, and our honeymoon. I cannot recommend Rachel enough to anyone looking to plan travel. I am forever grateful to her for helping me to plan the trip of my dreams!

Kirsten at Rosedale planned our family trip to Greece. It was our first time using a travel agent but definitely won't be our last! Kirsten made the trip to easy and stress free! She listened to all our "wants" and built the perfect vacation for our family of 5. The excursions she booked were amazing - both were great companies to explore Greece with and we learned so much from our guides. The hotels and resorts she booked for us were beautiful properites and the extra perks (like welcome baskets and food vouchers) that we got from booking with Kirsten were a wonderful bonus! Don't hesitate to use Kirsten to design your next vacation - you will be so glad you did!

Kirstin was amazing! My sister and I had 17 tabs open trying to figure out connecting flights and/or trains in Europe to no avail! I reached out to her for the first time hoping that she could somehow solve this mystery and she did just that! She made it all work seamlessly. Going forward, I will never NOT travel without first consulting her. She had tips, ideas, suggestions, and solutions! She was easy to communicate with, affable, responsive to our desires and vision and followed through on everything she said. She asked for feedback afterwards, and I shared the one thing I wished had happened. I wish we had gotten the itinerary in paper prior to departure. She and I miscommunicated about that as I had handled all stateside flights prior to international flights so she didn't know our actual date of departure. Highly recommend.

KIrsten Billhardt of Rosedale Travel did a fabulous job of planning and organizing our first trip to Scandinavia; she even figured out a way to work in a side trip to northern Germany within a 11-day (including flights) timeframe! It's been five months since we went, and we're still raving about the variety of experiences including outdoor excursions, city explorations, historical site and special attraction visits, different transportation modes, and delicious food (we loved the huge hotel breakfast buffets). We highly recommend working with Kirsten!

Rosedale knows the secret sauce of memorable travel.

Is COMO Shambhala Estate Right for You?

COMO works particularly well when the goal is to step away from a demanding routine without replacing it with another demanding schedule. The estate offers direction, but the setting and pace remain quiet.

We are most likely to recommend it for:

Burnout recovery with personalized guidance

Your plan can be shaped around stress, sleep, nutrition, or gut health rather than a generic itinerary.

Quiet without a formal digital-detox policy

There is no required cell-phone ritual. The jungle, river, and distance from central Ubud create the separation naturally.

Solo reflection

The layout makes it easy to spend time alone without feeling confined or isolated.

Some structure without a physician panel

The Wellness Paths provide a clear focus without turning the stay into a medical protocol.

Quiet time as a couple

Yoga, side-by-side treatments, and unhurried meals support connection without requiring a packed activity schedule.

Families seeking a wellness-focused private villa

Children are welcome, making the estate more flexible than several adults-focused destination wellness resorts.

Travelers deciding between a retreat and a clinical wellness resort

COMO occupies a useful middle ground between the complete flexibility of Amangiri and the diagnostic rigor of Canyon Ranch or SHA Wellness.

The question to consider is not simply whether you want a wellness trip. It is whether you want your week guided by a consultation while still retaining privacy, quiet, and control over your time.

COMO Shambhala Estate is not the right answer for every wellness traveler. Its strengths become clearer when its limitations are stated honestly.

Choose Canyon Ranch or SHA Wellness for clinical data

COMO offers consultations with Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine practitioners, an InBody body-composition scan, and optional sleep or microbiome testing. It does not provide a physician panel or the extensive biomarker testing associated with Canyon Ranch Tucson’s LONGEVITY8™ or the structured medical model at SHA Wellness.

If measurable clinical data is the main reason for traveling, one of those properties is likely to be a stronger fit.

Choose Miraval or Canyon Ranch for a packed daily calendar

COMO keeps its activity schedule relatively light and personal. It is not designed around 30 or more scheduled classes, lectures, and experiences each day.

Travelers who enjoy moving between structured activities from morning to evening may prefer Miraval or Canyon Ranch.

Choose BodyHoliday for a social, cocktail-forward vacation

Wine and cocktails are available at COMO, but the atmosphere remains subdued. The estate is not built around a lively bar, evening entertainment, or an outgoing resort community.

BodyHoliday’s open-bar model and nightly piano bar are better suited to someone who wants wellness during the day and a more social atmosphere at night.

Choose Rancho La Puerta for a long-established community

The continuity at COMO comes from returning to particular practitioners and developing those relationships over several stays. It does not have the same decades-old communal tradition associated with Rancho La Puerta and its shared dining culture.

Choose Amangiri for almost no wellness structure

COMO’s consultations and Wellness Paths provide meaningful direction. Travelers who want silence, architecture, privacy, and almost no organized wellness programming may find Amangiri more aligned with their expectations.

Choose Ojai Valley Inn for a shorter trip closer to home

Bali is a significant journey for most travelers coming from the United States. COMO accepts short stays, but its named programs make more sense when given several days to unfold.

For a shorter wellness break without long-haul travel, Ojai Valley Inn may be the more practical choice.

We address these differences before a deposit is placed. The purpose of the consultation is to book the right resort, not simply to confirm the first property under consideration.

Why Book COMO Shambhala Estate Through Rosedale Travel?

The resort can be booked directly, but the room reservation is only one part of planning the stay correctly. COMO’s programs, practitioners, accommodation categories, and separately priced services create several decisions that should be resolved before arrival.

Rosedale Travel evaluates COMO against other wellness properties rather than treating it as a standard luxury hotel. Our guidance is informed by direct conversations with COMO’s wellness team and ongoing property vetting, not just the resort’s public description.

We help with:

  • Determining whether COMO fits your wellness and travel goals
  • Comparing COMO with relevant alternatives
  • Selecting a Wellness Path or deciding whether to stay without one
  • Recommending a room, suite, Retreat Pool Villa, or Private Villa
  • Identifying consultations and practitioners to request in advance
  • Clarifying what is included and what will be billed separately
  • Coordinating dietary preferences before arrival
  • Planning the appropriate length of stay
  • Applying Virtuoso benefits
  • Supporting the reservation before and during travel
  • Recording preferences that may improve future wellness trips

One common misunderstanding is assuming a standard room booking includes the full structure of a Wellness Path. It does not. A guest who expects a Detox to Restore itinerary to be part of the basic room rate may arrive with the wrong expectations.

We clarify the program, pricing, and schedule before the trip so the stay has direction from the first day.

What COMO Shambhala Estate Is Actually Like

COMO Shambhala Estate occupies roughly 23 acres of jungle above the Ayung River in Begawan Village, in the Payangan district north of Ubud. It is approximately 90 minutes by road from Ngurah Rai International Airport and around 15 to 20 minutes from Ubud’s town center.

The estate opened in 2005 and takes its name and wellness philosophy from The Source, a natural spring long associated locally with purification. The spring feeds the Kedara pools and is central to the property’s sense of place.

Facilities include:

This is not a conventional Bali resort with a spa added to it. Wellness shapes the layout, dining, consultations, and rhythm of the stay, although guests are not required to participate in a structured program.

Rooms, Suites, and Private Villas

Accommodation is divided between residences and freestanding villas.

The residences include:

The correct category depends on how much privacy you want, whether you plan to spend significant time in your accommodation, and who is traveling with you. A couple focused on the treatments and shared estate facilities may not need a large private villa. A family or multigenerational group may benefit significantly from having a fully contained living environment.

The category name alone does not settle that decision. We compare the layout, privacy, trip purpose, and available rate before recommending a specific option.

Wellness Paths at COMO Shambhala Estate

COMO organizes its more structured wellness experiences through named Wellness Paths. Each one begins with a consultation and focuses the stay around a particular goal.

Detox to Restore

Detox to Restore focuses on gut health and cleansing. It may include colonic therapy and a personalized eating plan. This is better suited to someone prepared to follow a coordinated program than a guest who simply wants a few spa treatments between meals and excursions.

Ayurvedic Wellness Path

The Ayurvedic Wellness Path applies traditional Ayurvedic diagnosis and treatment to a specific dosha imbalance. Guests interested in this path should plan around practitioner availability rather than assuming every preferred appointment can be arranged after check-in.

Fit to Perform

Fit to Perform is built around fitness goals, performance, rehabilitation, and personal training. It may suit active travelers, guests returning from an injury, or those who want individual attention rather than general group exercise.

Nourish to Glow

Nourish to Glow concentrates on nutrition and eating habits. The path may be considered for concerns ranging from burnout to menopause, depending on the individual consultation and recommendations.

Connect to Rebalance

Connect to Rebalance is COMO’s nature-based digital-detox path. The estate does not rely on a strict device ban. Instead, the program uses reflection, environment, and reduced stimulation to create separation from everyday routines.

Integrated Wellness Path

The Integrated Wellness Path brings together diagnostics and guidance from several areas. It is the more appropriate option when a guest’s concerns do not fit neatly into a single category.

Consultations and Optional Diagnostics

Each Wellness Path opens with a consultation involving an Ayurvedic or Chinese medicine practitioner and an InBody body-composition scan.

Additional testing can include:

These add-ons are available at an additional cost. They provide useful information, but they should not be confused with the physician-led diagnostics or broad biomarker panels available at more clinical properties.

COMO is strongest when the guest wants informed guidance and a personalized plan without making medical testing the center of the trip.

Do You Need to Book a Wellness Path?

No. Guests can reserve a standard stay and book spa treatments, yoga, Pilates, guided hikes, and other experiences individually.

The difference is how the days are built. A Wellness Path guest receives a personalized plan following the opening consultation. A standard guest chooses from the same broader wellness environment but organizes the stay independently.

A standard stay may be the right choice when the main goal is rest, a few treatments, and time in the estate. A named path makes more sense when there is a specific outcome, such as improving sleep, addressing eating habits, rebuilding fitness, or creating a genuine break from constant stimulation.

We help decide whether the additional structure and cost of a Wellness Path are justified for your trip.

Dining at COMO Shambhala Estate

COMO has two restaurants with distinctly different approaches.

Glow

Glow follows the COMO Shambhala Kitchen philosophy. Its menus emphasize cold-pressed juices, whole foods, and dishes associated with goals such as sustained energy or blood-sugar stability.

Recipes are generally low in sugar and salt and do not use artificial additives. Guests following a Wellness Path will often eat from Glow as part of their plan.

Kudus House

Kudus House serves traditional Indonesian and international food. It is the better fit when a guest wants a broader or more conventional meal rather than choosing wellness-oriented dishes throughout the stay.

The dining program is flexible. Standard guests can eat at either restaurant or move between them without having their choices monitored. This is less prescriptive than SHA Wellness, where the Biolight menu forms part of the medical program, and closer to the choice available at Canyon Ranch, although without calorie labeling.

Alcohol Policy

COMO Shambhala Estate is not an alcohol-free resort. Wine and cocktails are available at Glow and through private dining, and guests are not prohibited from ordering them.

Alcohol is available, but it is not central to the experience. The estate places far more emphasis on juices, herbal infusions, whole foods, and nutrition guidance. Someone following a Wellness Path may also be advised to reduce alcohol depending on the goals discussed during the consultation.

The approach is closer to Miraval, where alcohol is available but not prominent, than SHA Wellness, where it is actively discouraged. It is also significantly quieter than the social, open-bar environment at BodyHoliday.

How Many Nights Should You Stay?

COMO accepts standard hotel reservations of different lengths. The more important question is whether the stay is long enough for the experience you are booking.

Two to three nights

A two- or three-night stay can work for someone already traveling in Bali who wants to experience the setting, spa, and a selection of à la carte treatments.

For a guest traveling from the United States specifically for COMO, we would not generally view two nights as enough time to justify the journey or settle into the estate.

Three to four nights

Three to four nights usually works better for a standard stay without a named Wellness Path. It allows time for treatments, yoga, the spring pools, and quiet without committing to a more structured program.

Five to seven nights

We generally recommend five to seven nights for a first visit built around a named Wellness Path. Detox to Restore and the Integrated Wellness Path particularly benefit from enough time for consultation, dietary adjustment, treatment, and recovery.

A longer stay does not automatically produce a better result. It needs to be matched to the program, travel distance, budget, and amount of structure you are comfortable following.

COMO is a strong choice for solo travelers who want reflection rather than a built-in social community. The residences and freestanding villas create privacy, while the consultations, movement sessions, restaurants, and shared facilities provide enough contact to prevent the stay from feeling closed off.

There is no strong group-class culture pushing solo guests into constant interaction. Someone hoping to make friends through communal meals and a busy activity calendar may prefer Rancho La Puerta, Miraval, or Canyon Ranch.

For a traveler who wants relief from a calendar and the freedom to spend meaningful time alone, COMO is often a better match.

COMO Shambhala Estate for Couples

Approximately 65% of Rosedale Travel’s wellness clients book as couples, and COMO works well for those who want quiet connection rather than continuous entertainment.

Couples can share yoga, book side-by-side treatments, spend time in the spring pools, and have dinner at Glow or Kudus House. The resort does not require golf, tennis, nightlife, or a challenge-based itinerary to keep the trip feeling complete.

The main planning question is whether both travelers want the same level of wellness structure. One person can be highly motivated by a focused program while the other may prefer a standard stay. That difference should be addressed before the reservation is finalized.

Traveling With Children or Extended Family

COMO Shambhala Estate is not adults-only. Children are welcome throughout the estate, although they are not permitted inside the spa. Babysitting can also be arranged.

This makes the property a workable option for families or multigenerational groups using a multi-bedroom Private Villa. It offers greater family flexibility than the adults-focused models at Canyon Ranch, Miraval, and BodyHoliday.

The experience is still quiet and wellness-centered. Families looking for an energetic children’s resort with extensive entertainment may find another property more suitable.

COMO Shambhala Estate vs. Other Wellness Resorts

Travelers considering COMO are often also looking at Amangiri, Canyon Ranch, Miraval, or SHA Wellness. These resorts are not interchangeable.

Property Core approach Best suited to Main trade-off
COMO Shambhala Estate Consultation-led wellness using Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine practitioners in a secluded jungle environment Guests wanting personalized guidance, privacy, and some structure without a physician-led protocol No broad biomarker panel and a long journey for most U.S. travelers
Amangiri Restoration through privacy, silence, architecture, and open time Guests wanting maximum flexibility and almost no built programming No named Wellness Paths or formal wellness consultation model
Canyon Ranch Tucson Integrative medicine, extensive testing, and a large self-directed activity program Guests wanting measurable data and many ways to structure the day A more active campus environment rather than a secluded retreat
Miraval Austin Mindfulness, digital disconnection, and a large menu of scheduled experiences Guests needing a more deliberate break from connectivity and a busy calendar Less privacy and considerably more daily programming than COMO
SHA Wellness A prescriptive medical wellness program supported by its Biolight dining approach Guests wanting a highly structured clinical protocol No alcohol and less freedom to create a self-directed stay

COMO’s advantage is the middle ground. It provides a real consultation and an individualized plan without requiring the guest to enter a physician-led clinical environment. At the same time, it offers more direction than a retreat where almost the entire week is left open.

Pricing at COMO Shambhala Estate

COMO Shambhala Estate falls within Rosedale Travel’s Premium tier. A typical budget is approximately $6,000 to $15,000 per person per week.

Meals and core yoga or wellness activities are typically included in the room rate. The following may be billed separately and should be quoted according to the chosen program and stay length:

  • Named Wellness Paths
  • Specialized consultations
  • Optional diagnostic testing
  • Treatments with senior practitioners
  • Additional spa treatments
  • Other individually arranged services

The final cost depends on the accommodation category, dates, number of travelers, Wellness Path, and treatment schedule. A room rate alone does not provide an accurate picture of the complete program cost.

Eligible Virtuoso reservations also receive the daily breakfast benefit and USD $100 equivalent resort credit described above.

Already decided on COMO?

A 30-minute call is enough for us to check live availability, confirm your Virtuoso credit, and talk through which Wellness Path actually fits your goal.

When to Visit COMO Shambhala Estate

Bali has a tropical calendar divided broadly between dry and wet seasons. The timing influences rates, weather, and how easily guests can use the outdoor areas.

Dry season: April through October

The dry season generally offers the most reliable conditions for guided hikes, outdoor treatments, and time at the Kedara spring pools. It is also the busier and more expensive period, particularly during July and August.

We tend to recommend these months when outdoor activity and predictable weather are priorities.

Wet season: November through March

Afternoon rain is common during the wet season, although it does not necessarily continue throughout the day. The jungle is particularly green, and rates can be lower.

COMO’s indoor treatment and consultation facilities make rain less disruptive than it would be at a resort dependent on outdoor programming. Wet season can be a sensible choice for a guest who values lower rates and does not mind adjusting plans around occasional showers.

How Rosedale Travel Plans the Stay

Working with Rosedale Travel follows a defined planning process rather than an open-ended exchange of booking links.

01

Consultation

We begin with a 30-minute conversation about the purpose of the trip, how much structure you want, and whether the priority is sleep, gut health, stress, fitness, nutrition, reflection, or simply quiet.

02

Resort-Fit Assessment

We determine whether COMO is the right property. When Amangiri, Miraval, Canyon Ranch, SHA Wellness, or another resort would better match the goal, we explain why.

03

Wellness Path and accommodation recommendation

We recommend a named Wellness Path or a standard stay, along with an appropriate room, suite, Retreat Pool Villa, or Private Villa.

04

Practitioner and consultation planning

We identify appointments that should be requested before arrival. This may include the estate’s Ayurvedic or Chinese medicine practitioners and any optional diagnostic services.

05

Reservation and Virtuoso benefits

We handle the booking and apply the applicable Virtuoso amenities.

06

Pre-arrival coordination

We communicate relevant wellness goals and dietary preferences to the estate so the opening consultation and first days have a clear direction.

07

Support and follow-up

We remain available if part of the plan needs to change during the stay. Afterward, we record useful preferences for future trips at COMO or elsewhere in our wellness network.

A Note About Plant-Medicine Retreats

Rosedale Travel does not book or recommend psychedelic-assisted or plant-medicine retreats, including programs involving ayahuasca, psilocybin, or ibogaine.

This is a Rosedale Travel policy rather than a limitation specific to COMO Shambhala Estate. The medical-screening requirements, different legal frameworks across jurisdictions, and safety considerations sit outside our advisory expertise.

Clients seeking that category of retreat are better served by a qualified specialist rather than a general wellness travel advisor attempting to assess a program outside their scope.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is COMO Shambhala Estate a clinical wellness resort?

No. COMO does not have a physician panel or extensive biomarker testing. Its Wellness Paths use consultations with Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine practitioners, supported by an InBody body-composition scan and optional sleep or microbiome testing.

Canyon Ranch or SHA Wellness is generally a stronger choice when medical diagnostics and measurable clinical data are the priority.

Do I have to book a Wellness Path?

No. You can stay at COMO and book yoga, Pilates, guided hikes, spa treatments, and other experiences individually.

A Wellness Path is more appropriate when you want the stay organized around a specific outcome and prefer a personalized daily plan following your initial consultation.

Can I drink alcohol during my stay?

Yes. Wine and cocktails are available at Glow and through private dining. Alcohol is not prohibited, although it is not a central part of the resort experience.

Guests following a Wellness Path may receive nutrition guidance recommending that they reduce or avoid it.

How many nights do I need?

For a standard stay without a named program, we generally recommend three to four nights. For Detox to Restore, the Integrated Wellness Path, or another structured first-time program, five to seven nights usually allows the experience to unfold more effectively.

Two to three nights may be enough when COMO is part of a longer Bali itinerary rather than the main reason for the trip.

Is COMO suitable for solo travelers?

Yes. The estate is particularly well suited to solo guests who want privacy and reflection without feeling completely removed from other people.

It is less suitable for someone whose priority is a built-in social community or a full calendar of group activities.

Is COMO a good wellness resort for couples?

Yes. Couples can share treatments, yoga, meals, and quiet time without needing a heavily programmed itinerary.

We recommend discussing whether both travelers want the same Wellness Path or level of structure before booking.

Can I bring children?

Yes. COMO Shambhala Estate is not adults-only. Children are welcome across the estate, although they cannot enter the spa, and babysitting can be arranged.

A multi-bedroom Private Villa can work particularly well for a family or multigenerational stay.

What is the difference between COMO and Amangiri?

Amangiri removes most formal structure and relies on architecture, landscape, privacy, and silence. COMO offers a similarly secluded environment but adds consultations and named Wellness Paths for guests who want direction.

Amangiri is generally the better choice for almost complete freedom. COMO is better for someone who wants quiet supported by a personalized plan.

What is the difference between COMO and SHA Wellness?

COMO is less medical and less prescriptive. Guests retain more freedom over food, alcohol, treatments, and how they spend their time.

SHA Wellness is generally better for someone seeking a highly structured clinical program, physician involvement, and a more regulated dining plan.

Which airport should I use?

Guests normally fly into Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar. The drive to COMO Shambhala Estate takes approximately 90 minutes, depending on traffic.

The estate is in Begawan Village, around 15 to 20 minutes from Ubud’s town center.

Do you arrange plant-medicine or psychedelic retreats at COMO?

No. Rosedale Travel does not book that category of retreat at COMO or elsewhere in our wellness travel network.
